Book

SBYF commissioned a Bangladeshi writer from the Connecting Histories project to assist in the development of the book. This book largely reflects the structure and information provided by young people from consultations during the very nascent stages of this heritage project.

In order to increase awareness and to emphasise the importance of learning, preserving and understanding heritage SBYF worked in collaboration with Connecting Histories to engage young people on a Heritage Trail. This entailed taking a group of young boys to Central Library where they learnt of how items in references are catalogued and stored. Furthermore, the young people were also shown how historical documents were repaired and preserved to ensure they are available for general community viewing.

The heritage trail informed young persons where the heritage items developed from this project would be stored upon completion and how SBYF can ensure there is greater accessibility of the heritage items.

The book is a community-based resource, which not only details the historical roots and migration of the Bangladeshi community but also is localised and relevant to the people and area of North Smethwick.
